Our History 〰️

A Legacy of Faith Since 1903

Second Christian Church has faithfully served the Rockford community for more than 120 years. Founded by a small group of believers with a vision for worship, fellowship, and service, our church has grown from humble beginnings into a lasting testament of God’s faithfulness.

From our earliest days, the congregation has been guided by a commitment to faith, sacrifice, stewardship, and community. Today, we continue to build upon the foundation established by those who came before us, carrying forward a legacy that began with just a handful of dedicated families.

The Beginning: A Journey to Rockford

The story of Second Christian Church began in 1902 when several families relocated to Rockford from Evansville, Indiana, and Jacksonville, Illinois. Seeking a place to worship and continue their Christian fellowship, these families united to establish a church home in their new community.

Second Christian Church was officially organized in 1903 by twelve charter members:

  • Lewis Robinson

  • Ellen Robinson

  • George Robinson

  • Mary Robinson

  • Gary Edward Gary

  • Pinky Gary

  • Mary Carter

  • Mrs. Shanklin

  • Mrs. Bayliss

  • James Pincham

  • Tandy Pincham

  • Elizabeth Pincham

Nine of the twelve charter members belonged to one extended family, demonstrating the strong family bonds and shared faith that would become a hallmark of the congregation.

The church’s first pastor was Elder T.R. Bayliss, who traveled from Atchison, Kansas to shepherd the congregation. For ten years, he spent each spring, summer, and fall serving the church before returning to Kansas during the winter months.

Building a Permanent Home

The early congregation worshiped in various locations throughout Rockford, including homes and meeting spaces near Morgan Street. Many of these original locations have since been replaced by industrial and commercial development.

Determined to establish a permanent church home, members sacrificed and worked together to purchase a lot on Fremont Street for $175. While that amount may seem modest today, it represented a tremendous financial commitment for the congregation in the early 1900s.

The members began preparing for construction by digging a basement and laying a foundation by hand. In 1913, ten years after the church was founded, the congregation discovered they could purchase the frame of an existing building at a lower cost than constructing a new one.

One of the church’s pioneers, George Robinson, hitched his team of horses and personally moved the building from what was then known as Court Street Hill to the church’s present location. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the foundation was larger than needed, requiring members to quickly modify it before completing construction.

When the work was finished, Second Christian Church finally had a permanent place of worship.

A Church Built Through Sacrifice

Completing the church building came with a financial challenge. The congregation found itself carrying approximately $400 in debt, a significant amount at the time.

Once again, the church family rose to the occasion.

The women of the congregation organized community suppers, fundraising events, and solicitations. A singing group was formed and traveled to churches throughout the area, raising funds through special programs and performances. Some events brought in as much as $87, while others generated only a few dollars.

Through persistence, faith, and collective effort, the congregation eventually eliminated the entire debt.

Their sacrifice established a culture of stewardship and commitment that continues to inspire the church today.

Growth and Expansion

From its original twelve founders, Second Christian Church grew steadily throughout the twentieth century. By the church’s centennial celebration in 2003, membership had expanded to approximately 435 members.

The church also participated in significant ministry projects, including hosting what was then known as the Christian Missionary Convention, now recognized as the National Convocation. This historic event took place in August 1964 and remains an important chapter in the church’s story.

Throughout every generation, the congregation has remained committed to sharing the Gospel, serving the community, and strengthening the Body of Christ.

Continuing the Legacy

The future of Second Christian Church is rooted in the same faith that inspired its founders more than a century ago. Their willingness to sacrifice, serve, and trust God established a foundation that continues to support our ministry today.

As we honor our past, we remain committed to building for future generations, serving our community, and sharing the love of Christ with all who enter our doors.
